The Filipino-American demographic ranks as the second largest Asian migrant population in the United States, yet, the under-representation of the country's culture is undeniably massive. Filipino-Americans have garnered the parallel ubiquity that their fellow Asian (Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese) have attained in the United States. In comparison to the other Asian groups, there is a great lacking of Filipino restaurants, shops, festivals, and awareness. Such vigilance for heritage is also internally weakened, as most Filipino-Americans acquire colonial mentality and crab mentality amongst themselves. The history of the Filipino-American struggle in enduring legacies of American imperialism, occupation, and neo-colonialism, and combating this foreign force with heroism, bayanihan, and resilience, deserves to be acknowledged within the awareness of Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike. The misrepresentation that Westerners withhold that the Filipino-Americans are the 'Model Minority', subservient to the greed of their colonizers, need to be eliminated and relearned. Monumental figures in the Filipino-American story are Larry Itlong, Jessica Hagedorn, Dorothy Cordova, Fe Del Mundo, and Phillip Vera Cruz, My goal for this photography concept is to remove the xenophobic assumptions and generalizations of Filipino Americans, and consequently, to put emphasis on the importance of identity, heritage, and awareness.
